Not sure how you can tell. I believe there are programs that can actually Test 
the Memory - to make sure you don't have some kind of failures. Alternately - 
and not sure if this is the best suggestion - but, since you have 16GB - maybe 
you can Take out 8GB - and see if you still have the problem. Then, if you do 
have the same problem - then swap the 8GB and try again. Maybe someone else 
here can give more input on Memory issues.

As good a guess as any. Activity monitor says 16 gb. Used 15.81.
