My advice: get a spare machine, a PIII-800 will do, download a copy of
TrixBox and start a pilot project. I know there's a ~$349 card
avaiable from Digium for a starter card to route PSTN to VOIP
internally and externally -- I'll bet the British telephone standards
are different, though.

My understanding is that there are points of pain occasionally and a
bit of learning in configuring, but that it is workable. A local
consultant here has set up a bunch of Asterisk installations and
doesn't think it's that hard.
