<Sigh> Oh, Jean, I love when you talk dirty to me ... One of the problems with any educational system is that once a subject is covered, there is no assurance that the knowledge imparted will ever be used again. My sixth-grade teacher decided all her students would speak French. She taught, we learned. 5+ hours a day, 5 days a week, for the 40-week school year. When I got home from school every day, I spoke to my family. Mostly English, but some Polish, Spanish, Yiddish, and occasionally Russian. But no French. Now, nearly 50 years later it dawns on me that I was so foolish for not having forced my entire family to learn to speak French. Had I done that instead of all the other flighty things I did as a child, I would not have this problem of understanding Jean today.
