Likewise, if I can find room in the MBSS 2K7 budget, I too would like to
get a new machine, especially since I'll be finding new digs soon after
my divorce is underway. I need a machine where I can test deployments,
use as a source repository for SCC, and have insulation enough that the
kids can use it for whatever when it's my turn to have them. I really
don't want the added expense of another machine just for them. Perhaps
machine with 2 hard disks, one for MBSS, and one for me and kids casual
use, with dual boot option. I'd like to get 2GB of RAM, as I'm sure
that'd do just fine for me and my testing/usage for the next 5 years
(lol!). I don't necessarily want Windows Vista, as I'd rather stick
with XP or even go back to Win2K. I had a MSDN subscription a couple
years ago, so I've got the DVD disks for the various operating systems
(pre-Vista of course).

I'd love to put my own machine together as it'd be a neat experience
(and not hell, I hope!) but my worry is something said long ago: Dell,
Gateway, and the big dogs know what parts work well together due to all
of their R&D work in best configuration, and little ol' me doesn't know
these things and might use parts that are incompatible. Now that sounds
like FUD, but I don't know?!??!??? Anything you're not familiar with
can seem uncomfortable, of course, and these little worries are
magnified when that's the case. Then there's the factor of cost: by
the time you put a custom system together, is the price already as much
or more as the pre-built models?
