For what it's worth. I started putting my own machines together around '84. I didn't have too much trouble with hardware or matching up to software until the late 90's. Now, it's just more trouble than it's worth. My last 4 machines have been store bought and, yes, I buy the 3 year extended warantee -- good thing since my last machine is crapping out on me after 2 years -- to the shop it goes once I've got my new one up to speed.
IMHO, they're all built to crap out in 3 years, just like cars. You're the beneficiary of some good luck and bad luck right now. The bad luck is that the store bought PC's are all loaded with (shudder) Vista now unless you can find a discontinued one from last year with XP. The good luck is that (I suspect) m$ must be subsidizing the hell out of the vendors 'cause prices are at an ALL TIME LOW right now.
