I have been using external USB HDD units for backups for several years now,
and rant about how I do it once in a while. I do have a duplicate set of
HDD units (28 in total), one set of 14 HDD units is kept off site and
rotated with my on-site HDD units about once each month. On my Servers I
retain a few R-TT R-DriveImage (www.r-tt.com) file sets on the USB HDD
units. Then, using SyncBack (www.syncback.com), I run a full file-by-file
backup weekly, and a differential file-by-file backup the remaining days of
the week. For my workstations I perform a Norton Ghost or Norton Save &
Restore image once each week, retaining the most recent 4 image file sets,
one weekly SyncBack full file-by-file backup, and the remaining 5 days of
the week I do differential file-by-file backups.

The most I am at risk of losing is one month of files if the house burns to
the ground. I used to do tape backups until about 3 years ago. But with
all the machines I have, and all the data being backed up, I could not get
all backups completed by the time I started my workday, and rotating tapes
and managing multiple tapes per backup, had become a nightmare in comparison
to high capacity USB HDD units. If I do begin to get a bit paranoid about
losing data mid-month I could always begin to backup the USB HDD units to
tape, but thus far I have not had the urge to do so - despite having all the
equipment and tapes to do so.
