AFAIK, it was developed in a university environment, so development cost were intially an academic matter (so to say). As with many Open Source projects the money is not made in the license fees, but rather in the fees collected for consulting and creation of viable applications. We should be so fortunate as to have such great Open Source tools so widely available, and often with the same level of performance and stability as found with For Fee solutions.
If PostgreSQL and other similar Open Source solutions were even half the cost of Oracle and M$ SQL Server, and no reasonable No Charge alternatives were available, I would likely have stuck to pure VFP as long as I could, then migrate to one of the solutions that offer the best value. IMHO, Free <> Best Value, but it sure gets there faster than Multi-$$$.
