Well, as somebody who has arrived at the "never give M$ another dime" community, I think that the article is sorta right. My bellwether on computer usage is my wonderful wife. Smart as heck (obviously excluding her choice in men), successful, but a normal, that is to say "marginal," computer user. She's good enough to get by, and is trainable, but she isn't even slightly adventuresome. As background: To make some $$, I am back to teaching software, so I work directly with "normal" users frequently and intimately, so I can tell you that she is right in there. There is absolutely no way on <insert your deity>'s green earth that she would try linux on her own. No way. First of all, most people never heard of it. Second of all, most people (I really mean 80-90%) won't even play with menu items or buttons when they don't know what they do. They just won't. In my experience, the remaining 10-20% are somewhat adventuresome. But to take a leap big enough to play with an alternative OS? Never. They learned what they learned, and when they buy a computer, they want to use what they learned. Most of the time, that means buying the same that is at work. I am trying to get the training company with which I work to let me do a few linux seminars, even free ones, just to educate a few folks. (Boy! Do I have a lot to learn before I do that, however. Nothing like an impending class you are supposed to teach to get you to learn.)
