On June 6 2007, the US army and the Turkish came very close to conflict. The Turks have moved a massive military presence to the Kurdish border and have said that they will not accept an independent Kurdish state. Ditto Iran which is also home to a Kurdish population at least as large as its Shia minority. The only real politick solution is a federation based on a political union of the warring factions. The Shias must tone down their triumphalism and the Sunnis must recognize that they are a minority of 20% not the natural born rulers of Iraq. Dividing up the oil revenues will play a huge part in any solution. And yes, Ed, democracy is an improvement over the tyranny of Sadam. There are internal problems to work out and the malign influence of Iran and Syria to be dealt with; hopefully by diplomatic means; but all-out turmoil in the region serves neither of those malignant nations well, so there are grounds for hope. Al Queda will have to be eliminated, they have no useful role to play in Iraq or anywhere else. They are an irrational alienated little group of murderers who believe they are the successors of Mohammed, and no one in his right mind supports them in this. Graham.
