Did the employee thing for 8 years, then was finally laid off by completely inept management and a terrible product (7 months after leaving another company with incompetent management), so I thought "hell, I can create better software than these guys and I'd even do it myself for 1/2 the pay!" And here I am, 5 years later, working for probably less than 1/2 the pay I used to get as an employee. But am I happy? Yes, mostly. True, there's certainly days where I'd rather not have to be the one to go out looking for work but rather have it given to me, but that's the trade-off I guess of self-employment---it's completely up to you to make it happen, and if it fails, you have no one but yourself to blame. I'd be making as much if not more money than my employee days if I moved from where I am currently. However, my wife always refused to move, and now that the divorce is underway for her infidelity, I could move but my son and I are very close and I don't want to leave him. I want to be a regular part of his life, hence why I stick it out (for now) in good ol' bumble-fuck PA. (It's a very nice town, but getting work from the area is a real bitch.) -- Michael J.
