Fun indeed.  I tried something similar using Knoppix but it would not 
run as I didn't have a C compiler installed.  I downloaded the .tar file 
to my desktop and there was a utility similar to winzip for unpacking 
the tar file.  Hopefully your distribution has something similar.  From 
what I can gather most people avoid doing this like the plague and 
either try to get the package to install from or find a repository that 
you can do the auto install using synaptic.
You might want to join Ed's prolinux as there are many more 
knowledgeable linux people there.
