It is stupid but the bullets do not come down with the same force that they go up due to air resistance. The Mythbusters show demonstrated this with pennies dropped from a high building. No matter how high the building, the pennies always landed with the same speed and force. The force was not enough to cause any damage other than a little pain if they hit their heads.
The principle is called "terminal velocity".
