I usually have about 10 apps/windows open at a time and that was fine. The machine slowed down a bit after a few years (and more software loaded) but windows always does. I've seen Vista on brand new hardware - 2ghz+ pentium with 2gb ram etc etc and wouldn't decribe it as quick by any means.
