Michael: I do a lot small apps for mom & pops and small businesses, too. I have them look over the software, I show them how to use it and after a couple of days I ask them for feedback.
I also tell the small guys and it is written in my contract that the accuracy of the software is the customer responsibility. If they don't test the software and tell me about something that doesn't work right; I can't be held responsible. Others may disagree with this, but it has worked great for me.
