on the subject of technology, does anyone know if the new HD DVD's play onm
an ordinary DVD player. The reason I ask is we have several DVD players and
there is no point going HD if it makes them usable only on one player.

I agree with Ed absolutely - history is replete with examples of superior
ideas/products/technologies etc losing to inferior ones for reeasons that
have nothing to do with the inherent strengths/features.  
Often it's simply due to marketing clout ...

Sometimes (rarely ?) it is due to the need to opt for one rather than
another as a matter of expediency.
