I would drop using words like database and application because they are the
two "dumb" ends of the nTier development that I am sure you want to follow.

You have to decide Platform, Scale, and Growth.

Next you have to create the mission statement for the thing so you know it's
true focus.  After that you can determine if all of your messages for data
will be in a SOA / WebService environment.  Will you really rule all aspects
of this beast in a Web environment?  Can disconnected users still operate
like a Salesman out in the field without a VPN?

You need to better target your audience on what they do and how they do it
today.  Sure you could have dreams of linux running through your head but if
your doing work for accountants and they live and die Excel is it a
requirement to make this run on every OS or just an ego?

Good luck on this.  I have never been in this position before with someone
else's company.
