Note that by replying, I'm not condoning this completely [OT] thread
being on ProfoxTech. <g>

I try to buy locally from independent stores (mom and pop) whereever
possible. This keeps the small town charm alive and puts real money into
the pockets of real people that need it to stay alive. It also keeps
sales tax revenue in my locality, and these days it is sales tax that
keeps the fire department, police department, and other crucial city and
county services running.

There's a certain threshold though beyond which I won't go with the
local specialty stores, and that is usually when it comes to
special-ordering something from a manufacturer than the retailer doesn't
usually deal with.

From there, I'll drive 20 minutes to the 'big-box' stores or order it
online. But I stay away from the mega online retailers wherever
possible. I buy books from Powell's in Portland OR instead of Amazon,
for instance. Music I either buy directly from the individual band or I
drive to Santa Cruz to Streetlight Records, an independent store.

I avoid Walmart at all costs, and actively try to persuade people to
cease shopping there. I do buy things at the local Target and Ace
Hardware, as they pay decently well, support local nonprofits, and the
sales tax revenue goes to my city's coffers.

Just my 2 pennies. Now, let's get back on topic!

Paul
