You don't have to customize router settings for
controlling, only for being controlled.

IF you setup windows desktop on a client's site and
get the proper routing set up on his side, you should
be able to login anywhere in the world with a portable
computer and wifi connection.  I have not seen port
3389 blocked from any hotel I've visited.  I have
alwayw been able to remotely login to my clients from
hotel rooms and wifi hotspots.

If the client wants to connect to your computer, then
you're out of luck.

The only way I know of to allow others to connect to
you from an unknown place is to run a program like
gotomypc on your computer and it will connect via the
http protocol instead of tcp or upc.   I only used it
once a few years ago and hated it.  Maybe it's gotten
better.

I think for most applications Remote Desktop is the
answer.  It normally works on port 3389.  If you need
to control multiple computers behind a router, you can
set up each computer on it's own unique port.  You
have to make a registry setting on each of the
computers.
