John, XP I assume. I have had this happening since about November and I can't for the life of me sort out why. I get an Exception error in Explorer about twice a day and it then clears the screen of all icons and proceeds to rebuild the screen display again after a wait of about 20 seconds. Like you, I'm loath to rebuild the system. Damn the dreaded M$ as I'm sure its of their doing.
