John, one more thing then, see how you can install on a temporary basis one of those free explorer-like programs, even if they are time limited... and manually empty all temp folders, or as many as you can. Also empty, meaning fully and totally delete all temporary files wherever they may be including what may apparently be unrelated files (as long as it's from those directories. It may be necessary to boot into safe mode, in case part of the corruption is through some temp file that is "bound" to the Explorer program and makes it fail.
I've repaired more than one false program closure via this crude and elementary method. When I've done this before, I have also cleaned the registry using one of those specialty programs sold to do only that: registry cleanup. Best of luck, in any case.
