Actually, I had anticipated seeing those events in my lifetime, as at some
time the Commies Must Die mantra was beginning to wear a bit thin by the
late 70s. We needed a new national enemy. It was found with the War On
Drugs for a while, until the DoDruggies began to get into political
positions <g>, and now newly reformed with the War On Terrorism. The US is
a warring nation, despite all claims to the contrary. Our economy depends
on conflict, the cash flow lubricates business, even if it drives us into
deeper debt. But as the older enemies tire out new enemies must be (and
are) found. It seems every nation does this, not just the US.

As for the change from Windows to Linux (much less Mac), it is too large a
change in coding and tech support to make it worth anyone's while in my
industry. For a while Mazda was the only non-M$ platform, as they used OS/2
Warp (remember that OS?). Then suddenly they began to migrate toward
Windows. Next thing I know all my clients are running Windows PCs for their
manufacturer communications. All of the fancy-assed satellite system
infrastructures and proprietary desktop applications began to go away.

Now all manufacturers require dealerships to use Internet Explorer (v-6 for
now, all are avoiding IE7 still), and have migrated to on-line solutions as
opposed to desktop solutions. None of them seem to work well with FireFox,
and since there is no "reason" for the manufacturers to spend the extra
bucks to allow their apps to run on FireFox, much less accommodate IE7
(yet), it seems quite unlikely any of them are going to broach the "let's go
Linux" hurdle. There is no margin for them in doing so, although it could
benefit the dealers quite nicely IMHO in terms of reducing the burdens of
dealing with Windows related problems.

Never say never. Had I come to you in 1985 and said that in 10 years the
Berlin Wall will be gone and the Rooskies will be our big friends, you
would have rapped me in the mouth for being so stupid.
