I've never seen any performance problems with UNC paths.  The only
problem is when someone puts spaces in the share name...

Reminds me:
Recently deskshared into a Russian site in that had a problem.
Dropped into a command prompt and typed 'net use' to try and guess the
installation drive (it was a slow connection so I didn't want mess
around).  No mapped drives.  Odd.  Checked the shortcut and it was
pointing to \\server\app\app.exe (the server was really called
'server').  Checked the .ini file and the paths were all pointing to
\\server\app too.

Apparently it all worked fine - which was news to me!
