> Mac users are more vain than PC users (they are more likely to use teeth whitening products and buy shoes); they fancy themselves "self-important, extraordinary, and intellectually curious;" and they're more likely to buy organic produce, drive a hybrid, and drink Starbucks.
>They're also-surprise!-self-satisfied: 70 percent of Mac users surveyed claim they are happy with their purchase, compared to 59 percent of PC users. ...Okay, and the point is? heh-heh... My wife, and both her parents, LOVE their iMacs and Power notebook. I was put in a position of having to learn a lot about the Mac OS X platform, along with several different flavors of Linux, over the past 2 months. As harrowing an experience as I had anticipated, and having read over 14 books in the process, I must admit it has been a wonderful and enlightening experience. Now that I have become so closely impacted by having the Macs so close to me, and have gotten deeply immersed in the World Of Linux, my latest position is simply this... If a person wants to truly escape all the Windows insanity, along with all the virus and Malware threats, and have a great selection of well supports apps, get a Mac. If one must still run Windows once in a while, get a Mac and license XP Pro to run in a dual boot or Parallels/VMWare environment. If one can't afford to get a Mac, a great second option is to install Ubuntu Desktop Linux on a moderately beefy PC. There are still a lot of Linux based apps for the taking (literally), and one can still buy professional tech support for Ubuntu Linux with a moderate annual subscription (Ubuntu itself is totally free). For those of us that must remain in the World Of Windows, for a plethora of reasons, we get to continue to pay our annual fees for the best AntiVirus and AntiMalware protection, put up with the Great Vista Threat and edgy updates, and the perpetual bullying from M$ that just comes along with the territory (piracy protection, validations and activations). I will never fully escape Windows, but I have a nice set of alternatives to suggest to folks who are home users that need nothing more than to do email, casual surfing and perhaps some home finance and office-like work (OpenOffice). My new position with friends and acquaintances seeking help with infected PCs is now simply this, install Linux instead of using Windows, or get a Mac if they can, or go somewhere else for help. I am installing yet another Ubuntu Linux OS on such an infected PC later this morning for a person who does a lot of my electrical system work at our place (I am always adding more isolated ground circuits for my expanding # of Servers and PCs). The point? I am no longer willing to burn my time up trying to fix what can't be truly fixed when it comes to infected PCs due to an inherent design flaw in Windows for friends and friends of friends. I have other folks with more time to burn off than myself to refer them to for that. I am certainly well qualified to do that kind of work, just no longer willing to do so as a favor. Fox Rox, but Linux and Mac OS X rule! (Is that arrogant and smug enough? Oh, I do buy natural beef by the half carcass, and organic chicken. I also drink Reverse Osmosis purified water.)
