Carter's first term was my first Presidential election, and I voted for Ford. I was very disillusioned with the Republicans after the huge debt incurred under Reagan and on the verge of switching, but couldn't bring myself to vote for either Mondale or Dukakis. Especially not Dukakis. He struck me as a wooden, unemotional guy that thought with his head but ignored his heart and gut. I voted the first time for a Democratic president in 1992, for Clinton. I'm a conservative Democrat and he was a centrist. The choice between Clinton and Bush was made because Bush had not done well with domestic issues and Clinton was a long-term governor so he seemed experienced enough to me. I was unhappy with the way things went after the first mid-term election, but was still happy enough with him to vote for him again against Dole. I hated Bill's zipper problem. I understood Hillary staying married to him. I still like the Clintons because they are centrist and focused on achieving policy goals. After health care did not go through, Hillary did what she could and inroads were made. Picking up again after a failure is a really great trait, and Hillary has shown me over and over again that she won't just lie down and give up after a failure or even a betrayal. I also really like John McCain. I dislike his positions on judges and abortion rights. But he has shown good judgment on so many other topics that I can't overlook that. Had he won in 2000 I believe we would not be in Iraq and we would not have a $9 trillion debt. His votes and stated positions back that up.
