Email is much nicer IMO when you always stick to plain text. Email was 
never intended to send all the crap we send with it today. In 
Thunderbird, I read messages in the format they were sent in (I see HTML 
messages in HTML[1]) but *all my outgoing messages* are plain text. If I 
need to send something formatted, then I'll attach a PDF.

What is so hard with:

click reply
change subject if needed
trim excess
type response
click send

And if gmail is a limiting factor, why limit yourself?
