I have found that once in a while M$ will prepare to perform an update on my machinery (all are set to advise of updates, but to not download or install them), and advises (in so many words) that it has to "correct a setting". If I do not decline the suggested fix to my settings it will go ahead and reset my PCs to perform updates automatically. This bit me a while ago, so I am very careful to watch for such little default suggested changes (bastards, it is my PC, not theirs).
I have had a few clients wind up with IE7 on their PCs, which does not yet work properly with many automobile manufacturer communication processes (all require IE6, and tell End Users to not use IE7 yet). At first I thought these folks were doing the IE7 update themselves, but later found they are getting auto-updates despite having previously set their PCs up to only advise of available updates. Until I saw the little M$ suggestion to "correct" update settings on my PC I would not have believed the IE7 updates were not accidentally fired off by my clients. I have seen a similar behavior with my having deselected IE7 from future updates, where M$ suggests my update settings are incorrect, and wants to re-include IE7 in my updates. There is one client of mine that feels it is important that her PCs and Servers all get their M$ updates performed automatically. I have suggested she only let M$ advise of available updates, then select the ones she wants to run. But she manages over 200 PCs and 10 Servers by herself (all M$), and feels she does not have the time to monkey with that. So she lets M$ update automatically, although she did turn off the IE7 update on all her machines once a few got botched up by M$. But, sure enough, all of a sudden IE7 began to creep back into the mix again, causing her to spend a lot of time uninstalling IE7 on all machines, and re-deselecting IE7 from the automatic updates. BTW, when her Servers get updated they often reboot automatically with no regard for currently running processes. That has hosed open files on some Servers from time to time, but thus far has not caused any security related access problems. I think it is rather rude of M$ to do that, but they must feel their need to get updates to their little problems is more important than any processes End Users may have running. I am so glad M$ OS platforms are not used in Life Support systems <g>... In short, I think it is nice M$ provides updates on a No Additional Charge basis (that may change, I predict it will), but it would be nice if these updates did not cause problems once in a while. Also, when I set my machinery up to only advise of available updates, and/or deselect IE7 (or any other update) from an update recommendation, I expect M$ to comply with MY wishes, not jam their suggestions down my throat (again).
