I use the tableupdate function and a message appears if there is a conflict. We don't have many people updating records so it has worked okay.
In the old days I vaguely remember using rlock, but quit when buffering came along. Regarding SET REPROCESS I think that all depends on what sort of technique, if any, you use to deal with file contention conflicts.
