The Bill of Rights were intended to protect against tyrannical government. Those with a vested interest in building a massive super-state and controlling your life from cradle to grave (dictatorship "with benefits" as it were) would naturally be opposed to it, and seek any way to undermine it. Hence, McCain-Feingold's assault on the first amendment, and the Dems' assault on the 2nd, not to mention various encroachments on others over the years by both parties.
