I guess, after the joke, I owe a little more:

I think what Jesus is really saying in the verse above is that the study 
of God's word is like going to School.  At the beginning we learn the 
fundamental; the basic, and if we continue in our study, we will 
continue to learn and understand more and more.  For example, in going 
to school I learned math; first how to count, add, subtract, multiple, 
etc.  Later more was given/revealed to me in algebra, trigonometry, 
differential calculus, and integral calculus.

Had I dropped out of school early or neglected to continue using what I 
had learned, much of what I had learned would be lost/forgotten.
