At some point I'm looking for the price of gasoline and petroleum to
equalize, or the current situation might even reverse making diesel cost
less than gasoline. This is a hypothetical, but assume that gasoline
and diesel both cost $4.71 per gallon, as has been the more historic
relationship between the two fuels.

4.71 / 52 = .090577 cost per mile to drive the diesel
4.71 / 30 = .157 cost per mile to drive the non-diesel

You would save .066423 per mile driving the diesel

If you drove 15,000 miles each year you would save $996.35 per year.

Now assume you drive the diesel for three year before selling it with
the proceeds to be used on the purchase of a new model. I don't have a
blue book on this; because, the diesel Honda Accord has not yet been
introduced to the states, but I bet that you would recover the entire
premium paid of the more expensive, commercial grade diesel engine at
the time the diesel were sold or traded in on the new model, even
considering the discounted value of a dollar due to inflation or a
weakening dollar against other foreign currencies. The better resale
value of the diesel is due to a diesel engine's longer service life, as
compared to the lighter, more complex gasoline engine that wears out
more quickly.

Beside, the diesel engine is much more enjoyable to drive, more
dependable, less likely to be damaged from overheating or over reeving,
delivers a steady power even under load, like when pulling a tailor or
running the air condition, which has less effect on the power being
delivered to the drive train by a diesel engine than the gasoline
engine. Also, diesel fuel has a much higher flash point than gasoline,
so it is very much less likely to explode and burn in the even of an
accident. For example, I could wet a rag in motor oil and hold a match
to it, but it would take some time to ignite the oil drenched rag, but
gasoline, with a much lower flash point, could explode into flames with
the simple spark from a flint rock.
