        What about saying something like that, instead of just leaving it  
looking like a cop-out?

        What about checking the string length, and using the more efficient  
algorithm when possible?

        I don't expect perfection, nor can I deliver it. But I do expect  
honesty, and always strive to be honest about problems in my code.
