I've had a lot of luck with the office-grade HP OfficeJets: print, scan, fax, memory card reader, and self-serve front panel for direct print from memory card. With a network interface (and I like duplex, too), it doesn't need to depend on another machine (especially W2K3!) to offer its services over the network. The W2K3 machine could be just another client.
