Generally you either download a file from the website and then point the
router at it via the web/telnet interface. A lot of them also just have
an 'Update Firmware' button. 

If you start FireFox and go to http://your.router.ip.address do you get
a login form? The login will be either admin/password or your DSL
account login username and PW. From Verizon's forum it seems that some
people have had issues with recent firmware updates so YMMV.

If you have a Windows CD around why not create a Windows VM in
VirtualBox and use that to configure it ?
