Let me elaborate a bit on the other pros of having onsite mail:

+ We are in control of updates, patches, and supporting software such as
antivirus,
IMAP filtering, iCal/WebCal, webmail without the bloody ads, etc.

+ We are in control of setting up however many users we want, and however many
mailing lists we want.

+ We are in control of the company's domain name and DNS records, so we can set
up
alternate mail routing, etc.

+ Internal email never hits the Internet, which is kind of heart-warming in
that
nobody will be spying on that along the way, not to mention an internal email
will
get to the recipient in like .2 seconds.

+ Domain names like att.net, yahoo.com, hotmail.com say: "We aren't capable of
doing
it right, but buy from us anyway".

+ Do it right (hint: don't use Exchange or Outlook) and users remain happy. My
postfix/dovecot/squirrelmail/clamav/spamassassin/ImapFilter setup has been
running
with no issues and no downtime other than kernel updates for months now. Before
that,
I had some stability issues with the Linux clocksource but the mailserver has
been
rock solid for years.

For my main client, I maintain a Kerio Mailserver because they are used to the
slick
webmail, but that server sends/receives from the Internet via my postfix box
for
security (Kerio doesn't handle spam very well).

Yes, it can cost a bit of $$$ getting a free mailserver on a free OS set up
initially, but it pays off in the long term, in spades.

Paul
