I've been in IT a LONG time and I've seen a lot of technologies announced with great fanfare, adopted by many and then disappearing without trace once people realized that were valueless (or worse). When XML was announced I was unimpressed and still am. XML is an interchange format and as such is a massive compromise. All compromises are inefficient but they do actually work which is their reason for being. Using XML when you don't have to seems silly.

However, I think many would agree that there are some out there in geekdom who simply crave the latest buzzwords, claiming they're the panacea for all things IT just so they can say they're using the latest in technology. Shame on them.
