Ah, the "educated and highly intelligent" folk. 

IMHO, they're the cause of most of the confusion about what scripture
actually says. Wise in their own conceits, many of them have done
considerable harm, by taking it upon themselves not merely to interpret
scripture for hoi polloi like us, but also to invent fairy tales that are
irreconcilable with it---and make the whole proposition sound absurd,
instead of helping people make sense of it.

The Lord taught in parables, and there isn't one of them today that the
average person can't understand, once one or two cultural references are
explained.

This is not Christianity but churchianity.
