Gil, For what it is worth I have autoupdates set to "notify".
I was wrong about system32 being corrupted. It is there and I can see it with Bart-PE. I can find the service pack that caused the damage. It contains spuninst.exe and I thought I was home. But there is a problem with finding spuninst.log.... My data resides on D and E drives. I have backups but will copy the date to another drive, format c:, and reinstall xp. Oh well - that is why God made weekends. But M$ has decided to ignore that setting for updates they deem too important to not get out there. There was an article about that in PC World recently. The same issue that bit Carl bit me with my AMD 2900 machine. So far my old tricks are useless. I have a Ghost image, but no time to dink with it yet. I merely copied my backed up VMWare machine files onto a different PC and let 'er rip. One of the nice things about using VMware or any other Virtual Machine. If you have copies of the virtual machine(s) you can use them anywhere.
