Most of the data is images of my DVD collection. I basically keep the originals in storage, and use a copy in the player, since my kids often scratch and/or lose them. I also wanted to make finding a movie easy as sorting through boxes of discs was a pain, and the movie we always wanted was never in it's case even after finding it.
As for finding the movies we wanted easily, this idea failed to work out since so far as I could not keep all the images on 1 machine/drive, so they are spread out over many 500GB external drives, and keeping track of it is not easily manageable. This project, which started 3 years ago, has always been to have 1 massive storage pool to accommodate all my DVD data, plus everything else (work files, music files, photos, backup images, etc..), ie, the ultimate home server storage.
