I, for one, certainly do not understand everything I "know" about those
technologies I (try to) harness. Usually I do try to dig the info out on my
own, and often get bloodied in the process. But every once in a while I do
cast out a request for guidance. Pete, if I had anything to offer in the
way of help I would have gladly chimed in.

I feel your pain. I remember (time and again) so clearly how I felt when I
walked into my first computer lab in 1983, not knowing anything about
computers, and fearing to ask anyone in the lab for any help. A year later
I got bit by the PC revolution, dug up the info to get my new IBM PC booted
up (no classes anywhere, nobody I knew had a PC.), got the monster running
and never looked back. But I also recall too well that sinking feeling when
I first lit up the PC without the DOS boot disk (I did not know anything
about that stuff yet), and it responded with the internal ROM prompt of
"Ok?" coming onto the (color $$$) screen. I felt I had just blown off
$4,600 (1984 dollars, no less!). That is where I started. I was on my own,
and I think I am better off for that terrifying and humbling experience.

Any time I dig into a new OS or app (most recently Linux, then various
Virtual Machine apps for Windows and Linux, and now VMWare Server for Linux)
I feel a little lost. But I realize I have been lost before, and always
managed to find my way home, whether while driving in a car, or digging into
a new technology. GPS now helps with the car side of getting lost. And the
Internet, Google, and ProFox, is like my virtual GPS for all things techie.

I am certain you will get through this, learn a lot, then look back and
laugh at how difficult this once seemed. I admire you for the courage in
taking on both Dabo and Linux at the same time. In 2007 I took on Linux and
Mac OS X at the same time. Thought I would never get it. I am not quite
laughing out loud yet, but I am very comfortable with both platforms, and
quietly snickering once in a while <g>...
