I took the plunge and did a clean install on my Gateway laptop. It found all the hardware except one device ( vista couldn't find 6 of them ), it boots a solid 15 seconds faster than Vista and shutsdown more quickly as well. It looks like they ironed out the sleep-mode bug that plagues Vista as well.
The UI is cleaner, though in typical MS fashion they attempt to force-feed certain changes to you.... if anyone wants to learn how to turn quick launch back on just let me know. UAC is still there but can be tweaked so it is far, far less irritating than in Vista. XP mode is IMHO more of a marketing ploy than serious code, as the system compatibility tool is really effective so far. No problem running dev tools like VS2008, VFP, Flash and so on ... so far, it's stable, fast and fun to explore. I'd say it's worth a look.
