Usually this error is serious and usually has lots of other disk corruption. The easiest way to fix it is to reinstall everything from scratch.
If the corruption is small, try this. Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password requested is blank, and TAB over. Then type: Use Attrib -H -R -S C:\boot.ini DEL C:\boot.ini to delete the bad one BootCfg /Rebuild to search for Windows installations and make a new one. And yes, you'll need a real XP install cd unless your OEM included the Recovery Console (some HP's do). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Enzer, Charles (enzerch)" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 24, 2009 2:52 PM Subject: RE: [NF] Bad/missing HAL.DLL > What is the next step in repairing? > > -- Charles Hart Enzer, M.D., FAACAP -- > Volunteer Associate Professor of Psychiatry > University of Cincinnati Medical Center > Website: http://homepages.uc.edu/~enzerch > ________________________________________ > From: [email protected] [[email protected]] On > Behalf Of Michael Madigan [[email protected]] > Sent: Wednesday, June 24, 2009 1:13 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [NF] Bad/missing HAL.DLL > > I don't understand why they are having you restore a computer instead of > just fixing the issue. > > > > > --- On Wed, 6/24/09, Charles Hart Enzer, M.D., FAACP > <[email protected]> wrote: > >> From: Charles Hart Enzer, M.D., FAACP <[email protected]> >> Subject: [NF] Bad/missing HAL.DLL >> To: [email protected] >> Date: Wednesday, June 24, 2009, 10:31 AM >> **** Sorry, should have been >> originally sent as [NF] **************** >> >> Since the movers brought my Desktop PC to my new office, >> the PC has been >> slow, etc. >> >> **Machine seemed to be ok; but when Selecting [Safe >> Mode], two choices: >> * >> >> * *Window XP Professional* >> * *Window (default)* >> >> *The OEM **Support said that this means I have two >> operating systems. >> * >> *I asked PowerSpec -- the OEM -- to do a "total restore" >> with their OEM >> Recovery DVD. >> >> They had me delete the Master Boot Record.
