Here is a clever trick. It requires another computer. May not work. Set up the bad drive so as to read it on another PC Either physically install the drive on another PC Or use the USB to IDE/SATA adapter cable and connect the broken machine's hard drive to another PC (Caution I tried buying such an adapter on eBay but the adapter didn't work) Windows on the good PC will mount the drive as E: or F: Be sure to have hidden files and system files set so they show. Folder options --> view tab Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" Run chkdsk on the bad drive Start--> Run --> regedit Highlight HKLM Go to File --> Load Hive This brings up a navigation tree of files. Find the file that is missing or corrupt and choose that one to load. It will be in E:(or F:\)Windows\System32\Config and will be called just SOFTWARE or SYSTEM Regedit will ask you to name the hive. Just type "badpc" or any old string. It is temporary Regedit will say "One or more files containing the registry were corrupt and had to be recovered by use of log files. The recovery was successful." You have just repaired the registry. Unload that hive, so highlight that "badpc" hive that you can now see under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and go to File --> Unload hive Put the fixed hard drive back in the broken computer. If you used the USB adapter, be sure to click the Safely remove hardware icon in the system tray.
