Hi All,

Our VMware experience so far is:

We got a HP workstation with intel Xeon quad core processor and 8gb
ram. Put in a couple of 10k spin speed SATA mirrored disks and loaded
XP 64 bit onto it and VMware.

We had a windows RDP server and a DOS terminal server and one of these
licences is linked to the hardware, so if it goes down you have to buy
another licence. That was one of the major reasons for looking at
virtualisation.

Testing we did was creating 21 RDP sessions with light usage and about
15 DOS terminal sessions which open our FPD 2.6 accounting app (Pegasus
Opera). With all these loaded the processor usage of the main machine
did not go over 65%, which is pretty impressive. We don't think this
machine would do more than about 4 VM's.

We currently have 3 machines virtualised. One is the print/email Fox
app that used to sit on the computer next to me and serve jobs in a
queue. Our main Foxpro app usually just puts jobs in a queue for this
app to process.
Had this machine gone down I could have got another machine to do that
same thing in a couple of hours installing all the printers and setting
it up exactly the same way. Now we have it virtualised we can run it
from several places and with it being backed up we can restore it and be
up and running in no time. The app has been running for about a week
now no problem.

Anyone else with some virtualisation experience that would like to share?

Cheers

Peter
