Apple has a history of shooting itself in the foot. In this case, it appears to be its exclusive relationship with AT&T. Previously, it was relying on single suppliers for their highly custom hardware instead of commodity hardware. They put out brilliant products but paint themselves into stupid corners. Unlike prior blunders, I think they'll survive this one.
