They are mostly using commodity hardware now in their computers. Their laptops are like all laptops out there: mostly proprietary and tied to the intended operating system. Their operating system (darwin) is open and free. I don't like how controlling they are, either. But I love their hardware and mostly love their software, when run on Apple hardware that is. iTunes on Windows looks and feels horribly out of place, for instance. But mostly I don't get how you can make the proprietary/closed argument with such smugness.
