Tina:

Most email clients have a way to establish rules for moving incoming mail to
the appropriate predefined or user-defined folders. You could establish a
rule that every email from ProFox that starts with "[OT]" goes to the
"Deleted Items" folder, and for the most part all the political chatter will
go silent for you. This is covered in the FAQs and Ed is open about not
restricting discussions.

Ed by conscious and deliberate choice puts no restrictions on [OT]
discussions, and these are largely personality driven and usually about
politics, but not always. He has a tech-only list that filters most of it
out for you I believe.

My participation in ProFox is almost 100% OT, because I don't do much FoxPro
(unfortunately), but I like jousting with folks around the world in what is
mostly tit-for-tat banter about world events, even though outside of the
context of the many-year OT relationships that draw me back, the discussions
may seem quite unfriendly, even pointless. We all have our moments.

You kinda have to know (and on some level care about) the folks involved.
Contrary to popular misconception, I like or at least am entertained by just
about everybody with whom I get in beam-em-up discussions, but I don't feel
obligated to sugar coat what I say or how I say it--nor do I expect kid
gloves in return. Truth be told, I often bristle at what I myself
occasionally say. :) If that kind of free-for-all,
say-or-read-things-you-might-regret debate doesn't interest you on any
level, you better have a good filter!

OT on ProFox is not for the faint of heart. There is no other forum quite
like it, and I think that's a good thing or I wouldn't, uh, waste as much
time as I do composing (what I think are) clever retorts or posting items I
know will start a good mental food fight. :-)

(Incidentally I disagree that this is technically "trolling" because I don't
do it anonymously, the forum has a LOOOONNNNGGGGG history, and my purpose is
not merely to cause controversy. That's just a necessary byproduct of what I
do it for, which is to throw out ideas or turns-of-phrase among friends (or
at least acquaintances) and see which ones make it through the gauntlet of
brutal criticism. Not everybody's into that.)

All that said, If Ed were ever to split the forums up and have one just for
debating, I'd gladly take my opinions there, mostly because I enjoy
specifically this activity with specifically this ribald band of OT
hooligans. It's kind of like a water cooler where you don't have to
introduce yourself all the time, "everybody knows your name" (for good or
ill) like a cyber version of the sit com Cheers... :)

Ironically, if I really were into proselytizing my views, it's probably the
last place I'd go. The people who disagree with me on ProFox OT are pretty
dense. ;-)
