It does. There must be at least ten different modules that are running all the time checking for hacks. Some check email in and out. There is a SPAM detector. Others check for hijack attempts and scanning of files when they open and when they install. That wouldn't be so bad if they were 100% effective. But I have repaired machines running AVG that got infected anyway. Spam and root-kits are a major problem.
Avast checks for updates everytime you boot. The authors are in Europe and are trying hard to build a good product. It only does root-kits and viruses not all the things a full suite would do but it is not perfect. You need other products to round out a suite.
