Here's an exploration of the problem when you don't put in the [OT]:

You apologize in the same message. Oh, you *thought* of it - why didn't 
you just put on the [OT]! If you are one of the "right" people it will 
be OK, though.

You remember it after it comes back. Should you apologize then? If you 
do you have taken two messages worth of bandwidth, to say nothing of the 
precious time of the guys who magically find the time to complain, which 
was part of the original [OT] argument. If you correct it without the 
required politically correct groveling that will be wrong too so you 
can't win.

Then there are the scolds who lurk the tech list waiting to pounce. In a 
way you are making their day so . . .

The grand prize goes to the guys who are on tech but nevertheless have 
something [OT] they want to share with others on tech. They put on the 
OT or ot but "forget" the square brackets. How often have we seen this? 
Has anyone ever scolded *them*?
