Absolutely!  I remember designing systems in the 90s for my work stuff 
that automated so much so that I didn't have to mess with manual crap 
AND made sure I didn't make any stupid human errors.  Life was so good! 
  It's kind of ironic though that you program yourself out of a job when 
you really made some things all come together.  Other devs around me 
were still futzing around with all this tedious, repetitive manual 
sh!t...not me...I was enjoying my cookies.  ;-)
