Hi Geoff,

Well, that is the standard argument for a lot of things in the US. To 
paraphrase the generic form "We are legal (or whatever) professionals, 
but you (everyone else) are just (laymen, amateurs). So you give us all 
of your money (always about money) and (someone) will dole out a living 
allowance to you for what (we decide) you 'actually' need".

Makes sense to them, and to those who hate or envy us.

Lawyers are poorly regarded in the US.
